21 Days to Pageant Ready!
What is your first reaction when you think of pageants? Do you think of the chaos on Toddlers and Tiaras? The hot mess in Miss Congeniality? Honey Boo Boo!?
It’s no secret there are definitely negative stereotypes out there when it comes to pageants: Why would any woman want to put herself out there to be judged? What is the point of taking a risk like that? Pageants are an easy target for people to attach negativity to. We often connect stereotypical judgment to things we do not understand making it easier to dismiss any interest or curiosity in them. Having to overcome these types of assumptions make it even tougher for anyone to want to associate with a pageant at all!
The truth is that women who compete in pageants are really using their experience as a tool to improve themselves. These are women who are driven to be prepared for bigger opportunities and have a plan to present the best version of themselves. Televised pageants could never produce all of the moments of sacrifice, preparation, and dedication it has taken to get to compete at a national level. You’ll never see enough of the training, only the end result. If you only ever read the last pages of a book, watched the end of a movie, or saw the end of a basketball game, you’re only getting one side of the story.
It may seem like what the contestants are doing on stage comes so naturally to them. The production has a “wow” factor with all of the glitz and glam. But the truth is that a lot of training has occurred to make it look easy. It isn’t natural for anyone to wear an evening gown on a stage under a thousand lights, it’s not something that most people do on a regular basis! And every single one of the girls on stage has a box of embarrassing photos at home, has likely gotten a traffic ticket or a bad grade, and has eaten a piece of cake for breakfast.
So who is a “pageant girl”? Where do they come from? What secret society has been recruiting these women throughout history!? Everyone starts out as a beginner, and the truth is that pageant girls are all around us. Some have competed, most have never even considered competing, but all of us have an inner pageant girl. Pageant girls are always trying to improve themselves. They are introspective and are problem solvers. They believe that hard work and discipline will pay off. They are organized, busy, and always seeking to learn more. They are interested in the concerns of their community, and they are willing to lend a hand.
Pageants are a great way to build confidence and develop the discipline necessary to achieve goals. Competing in a pageant builds character, poise, good sportsmanship, verbal communication, time management, and goal setting skills. Being comfortable with things like interviewing, filling out applications, articulation, applying makeup, carrying yourself with grace, and speaking with conviction are skills that are translatable in all areas of our lives. Even exposing yourself to other women who have these same goals is an incredible investment in your future!
If you're thinking, “Hey, some of those things sound like me!” you are an ideal candidate to compete in a pageant. Now, where do you start…...?!
(yes, the crickets are chirping)
Entering a pageant can feel like bungee jumping. Maybe somewhere someone said “just try it, you’ll like it” and you take a blind leap of faith. More often what happens, is instead you don’t jump and stay on the ground. What if you could have practiced some smaller jumps first? What if you could have had time to learn more about the process? There has been a gap that had existed between the spark of an interest to compete and knowing what to do to so you can take that jump. Interested contestants invest in an adventure without learning the short cuts that would make the path easier, or they back off and find other paths to cross.
